Google's AI Mode in Search - a conversational AI surface reached from the Google search box (udm=50). Prompts and follow-up turns happen in-page rather than on a separate product domain, so usage is otherwise invisible to shadow-AI reporting.
Google AI Mode is a conversational answer surface built directly into Google Search, reached by switching modes from the standard results page (the udm=50 parameter). Rather than returning a list of links, it synthesises an answer inline and supports follow-up turns in the same thread, functioning much like a standalone chat assistant while never leaving google.com. Because it has no separate product domain and no distinct sign-in, usage is easy to miss in shadow-AI reporting — it looks like ordinary search traffic unless the mode parameter is inspected. It is available at no cost to anyone signed in to a Google account, which makes adoption effectively frictionless inside organisations. For governance purposes it is best treated as a general-purpose assistant with the same prompt-leakage considerations as ChatGPT or Gemini.
